Captions

Add closed captions to a video or podcast video, generate them automatically from the audio, and fix mistakes in the caption editor.

Captions are closed captions people can turn on while they watch. They show wherever the video plays: the app, your website, and TV.

You can add captions to:

  • Videos: open a video and select Captions.
  • Podcast videos: open a podcast video. Captions is near the bottom of the window.

Captions are saved right away. You don’t need to select Save on the video.

A video needs to finish uploading and processing before you can add captions. Videos uploaded before we moved to our current video hosting can’t have captions. To add them, upload the video file again.

Add captions

Select Generate captions or Upload a file

  • Generate automatically: made from the audio in a few minutes. You can fix mistakes after.
  • Upload a file: a .vtt or .srt file from a caption service or editor. Select Choose .vtt or .srt. You’ll see how many captions are in the file.

Choose the language

For automatic captions, choose the Language spoken in the video. Captions are written in the language people speak, not translated.

For a file, choose the Caption language. You can add a track for each language.

Select Generate captions or Upload captions

Automatic captions show Generating while they’re made. It usually takes a few minutes, and you can leave the page. When they’re done, they show Automatic. Uploaded captions show Ready.

If automatic captions show Failed, select Try again or upload a file instead.

Automatic captions are good, but not perfect. Check names, places, and scripture references, then fix anything that’s off.

Edit captions

Select Edit next to a caption track. The video plays on the left, with the line on screen underneath. The lines are on the right.

  • Change the words: type in a line’s text box.
  • Fix the timing: type a new start or end time, or play the video and select the target icon to set the start or end to the current moment.
  • Jump to a line: select the play button next to it.
  • Follow video: keeps the list scrolled to the line that’s playing.
  • Find & replace: fix a name or word everywhere at once. Enter what to Find and what to Replace with, then select Replace all.
  • Add or remove lines: select + to add a line after one, Add a line to add one at the end, or the trash can to delete one. Empty lines are left out when you save.

Select Save captions. Saving automatic captions marks them as edited.

More caption options

Use a track’s More menu (⋮) to:

  • Download .vtt: a copy of the captions file.
  • Replace with a file: upload a new .vtt or .srt.
  • Generate again: make new automatic captions.
  • Delete: remove the track.
Replacing or generating captions again replaces the current captions in that language, including any edits you made.
